About

Fatima Etemadi is a prominent Afghan woman, human rights defender, and activist, recognized for her leadership in the women’s protest movements against the Taliban. With a focus on education, sports, and human rights, she has worked tirelessly to improve the situation of women in Afghanistan and continues to amplify the voices of justice-seeking women under extremely challenging circumstances. She currently resides in Pakistan and is an active member of the **Afghan Women’s Justice Movement.

Born in 1990 in Jaghori district, Fatima Etemadi completed her primary and secondary education at Shaheed-e-Tabaquss School. In 2008, she began her career as a teacher at Mazar-e-Bibi High School while simultaneously pursuing studies in Persian language and literature. After graduating from Jaghori Teacher Training College in 2010, she moved to Kabul to continue her higher education. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Law with a focus on Criminal Law from Ibn Sina University in 2014 and a Master’s degree in Law from Bakhtar University in 2020.

In Kabul, Fatima worked as a teacher and school administrator and served three years in the Ministry of Education. Passionate about sports, she was a four-year member of Afghanistan’s national karate team, coached for three years, and holds three recognized certificates and a black belt in Shotokan Karate. In 2018, she founded a sports club in the Omid-e-Sabz neighborhood to provide a safe space for girls to train.

Her social and cultural initiatives include establishing literacy courses in collaboration with local activists and launching a clothing production workshop in Kabul that provided employment opportunities for women and girls. She also actively participated in human rights, education, and peace seminars and collaborated with various organizations.

Following the fall of Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, Fatima faced major personal and professional disruptions: her family was scattered, her educational and social initiatives were halted, and her sports club and workshop were closed. Despite these challenges, she continues her human rights advocacy and remains a dedicated member of the Afghan Women’s Justice Movement.

Fatima believes that diversity and multiplicity in women’s protest movements, despite differences, positively impact their struggles by creating new paths toward shared goals. She emphasizes the crucial role of the Afghan diaspora in supporting women activists and highlights the hardships faced by Afghan women migrants in neighboring countries, particularly in Iran and Pakistan, including discrimination, insecurity, and limited access to basic services.

Despite these obstacles and threats, Fatima Etemadi remains committed to upholding justice, promoting women’s rights, and empowering future generations in Afghanistan. She continues to stand alongside Afghan women, embodying resilience and hope for a brighter, more equitable future.
